LOVE AMONGST THE NOISE

Love Amongst The Noise

Love Amongst The Noise was painted from the complicated place of loving a job that is becoming increasingly difficult to do.

As an Emergency Nurse, I have always believed that caring for another human being is an extraordinary privilege. There is so much love on an ED floor. It exists in the smallest moments: a hand held, pain relieved, fear softened, someone quietly staying beside another person on one of the worst days of their life.

But lately, amongst that care, there is another feeling.

The floor can feel like a battlefield. The urgency, the noise, the constant pressure to move faster, the growing acuity and the feeling that there is always another person desperately needing the space you are standing in.

I wanted this piece to hold both realities.

The red moves through the flowers almost like warning signals, while life continues to grow around it. The flowers are the people who keep caring. And hidden amongst it all is the little doorway I place within my work, because I still believe there is a way through.

This isn't a painting about giving up.

It is about loving something enough to believe it can be better.

Because love can be hard. Caring can cost us something. But faith in change, growth and our capacity to keep choosing humanity are incredible values to hold onto.

And perhaps the most radical thing in a system that asks us to move faster is to remember why we cared in the first place.
